Time for a spring clear-out at one of London’s famous car boot sales, where you can easily offload your unwanted possessions in exchange for cash. Win-win.

Get into the marketplace swing of things in North London, beginning with the Holloway Car Boot Sale (Sat 8am-4pm & Sun 10am-2:30pm, Holloway Road, London, N7 6LJ, Tel. 01992717198). Here you’ll find a vast assortment of reasonably priced second-hand goods, and some stalls offering student discounts of 10%. Then there’s the flea market-esque St. Augustine’s Car Boot Sale in Kilburn (Sat 10am-3pm, St. Augustine’s School, Kilburn Park Road, London, NW6 5AW, Tel. 07949010231,, which is commonly regarded as one of London’s best. Offerings include quirky vintage birdcages and Cath Kidston crockery; set up shop in your Zipcar for £14, or van for £25.

Car boot sales are an industrial operation in South London, meanwhile. The Wimbledon Car Boot Sale (Weds 10:30am-2pm, Sat 6:30am-1:30pm, Sun 7am-1:30pm, Wimbledon Stadium, Plough Lane, London, SW17 0BL, Tel. 020 7240 7405) operates three days a week, in a stadium filled with more than 200 punters. The frenzy starts early, so get there ahead of time to maximise your sales. Rotherhithe Car Boot Sale (Sat & Sun 11am-late afternoon, Fisher Football Club, Salter Road, London, SE16 5HL, Tel. 07929847405, is another great South London option, where items are dirt-cheap and the buyers are willing.

You’d expect East London to be a hotbed of markets teeming with second-hand bargains – but really, the only place to be seen is The London Car Boot Sale (Sat 8am-3pm & Sun 7am-2pm, Princess May Primary School, Barretts Grove, London, N16 8DF, Tel. 07956312131, This place offers a selection of antiques, retro, vintage and vinyl, and is as hipster-cool as you might expect. Pitches cannot be reserved in advance, but sellers with vehicles must show up 15 minutes early and join the queue in Barrett’s Grove; cars are charged at £12, vans at £20.

One man’s trash is another man’s treasure at Shepperton Car Boot Sale in West London (Sat 8:30am-late afternoon, New Road, London, TW17, 0QQ, Tel. 07807609283, This authentic car boot sale experience is one of the friendliest around: perfect for beginners, but also for experienced booters hunting down a real bargain. Sellers set up shop from 7am, with vehicle charges ranging from £12 to £27. The Hounslow West Car Boot Sale (Sat 7:30am-4pm & 7:30am-3pm, Hounslow West Station Car Park, Bath Road, London, TW3 3DH, Tel. 07789131623, offers a similarly cheap ‘n’ cheerful experience, with gates opening at 6am.
