Despite the Americanism in this football centre’s name, Catford Soccer is a top location for a good ol’ British kick about in South London. With 10 outdoor floodlit 3g surfaced 5-a-side pitches, a 7-a-side pitch, and four grassed 11-a-side pitches, there’s plenty of availability, plus there are shower and changing facilities available, free parking and an on-site bar to entertain your non-driving friends.

Run by the Westway Trust (who aim to regenerate the area under the A40 Westway Flyover), this Sports Centre is excellent value for money. There are eight outdoor floodlit pitches on offer, all with high-tech 3g surfaces. And this is not only a destination for football; there are squash and tennis courts, a gym, and one of the best climbing walls in London.

If you fancy having a kick about with your mates on the same grounds the German and Brazilian national football teams have done, then head to The Hive in North London, also home to Barnet FC. It costs a little more than other grounds, but it’s worth it for the experience and the top notch facilities.

These recently renovated macadam surface courts are some of the best public tennis facilities in Greater London; they even have Beacon status from the Lawn Tennis Association (that means they’re pretty well regarded to you and me!). You don’t need to be a member to play on one of the five tennis courts at Bruce Castle Park; prices are around £5/hour and courts can be booked online.

For better court availability in North London Bush Hill Park is a good bet. There are 10 public courts on offer, and they’re all free to use – just turn up and play. If you want to take your tennis a little more seriously, Bush Hill Park Tennis Club offers coaching for non BHP members from just £8/session, or you can become a full-fledged member for only £99/year.

The Parklangley Club aims to make tennis accessible to all with its Tennis for Free initiative. Just sign up your family or household with their one-off £25 membership fee (which gives you a key fob for entry into their three South London locations) and you can play anytime for free. The courts at Croydon Recreation Ground are by far the nicest, with six available to book online.

Deep in the wooded darkness of Effingham Forest there is a war zone – or rather seven unique paintball battle zones guaranteed to have your heart in your mouth as you duck and cover from the onslaught of brightly coloured pellets. At Delta Force’s Effingham Paintball Centre you can test your resolve in a zombie apocalypse, capture a Viet Cong village or even plan a hostile takeover of Castle Wallenberg. Delta Force does paintball like no other.
