meet zipcar for business members the wandle trust
Each month we put the spotlight on one of our Zipcar for Business accounts to celebrate the great work they do and how they use Zipcar to make it happen. Meet the Wandle Trust an environmental charity dedicated to restoring the river Wandle in south London to its former glory. Teams of volunteers dive in (literally) and pull out everything from shopping trollies to motorbikes. Read on to find out more about the Wandle Trust's work and how they use Zipvans to make it happen.
"The river Wandle is a unique South London chalk stream which flows north from Croydon and Carshalton, to join the Thames at Wandsworth.
Useless for navigation, the fast flowing water and steep drop from source to mouth made the Wandle ideal for milling. At the time of the Domesday survey – 1086 - there were already 13 mills along the Wandle and, during Victorian times, there were 90 mills along its 11 mile length producing everything from snuff to gunpowder. At that time it was considered one of the hardest working rivers of its size in the world. Over the centuries this chalk stream became more and more polluted and was declared an open sewer by the 1960s.
Formed in 2000, the Wandle Trust is an environmental charity dedicated to restoring and maintaining the health of the river Wandle. The water in the Wandle is now some of the cleanest in London, but the river has been treated as a flowing dustbin for at least the last 150 years. Unfortunately, many people still use it as a place to dispose of things they don’t want.
That’s why we hold Community Cleanups up and down the river on the second Sunday of every month, to improve the environment for fish, insects, birds and people.
Volunteers get into the river in chest waders, pulling out everything from shopping trolleys to motorbikes. This rubbish is taken by other volunteers by wheelbarrow to a pre-determined dumpsite where it is removed by the Council’s waste management teams.
We provide all our volunteers with the kit they need to carry out a river cleanup safely. Over the years as well as the safety chest waders, we have bought gloves, litter pickers, wheelbarrows, bin bags, tools, first aid kits and hand washing facilities etc. We also put up a gazebo from which we serve tea, coffee and cake to our hard working volunteers.
In order to transport all our equipment to and from the location of the cleanup we decided to use Zipvan. It’s easy to book online and has lots of convenient pick up points near to where we store all our equipment. Being reminded via email and text is extremely helpful and we can even extend our booking if we need the van for longer."
