It is a truth universally acknowledged that moving house is hard work. Even the most organised and checklist-savvy among us struggle with the trials and tribulations of this gargantuan feat. How, for example, are you planning to move that floor-to-ceiling bookcase of 19th century classics? Or how are you going to sort through that dreaded drawer of miscellanea in your lounge? Never fear, Zipcar is here to guide you through the process with our 10 top tips for moving house.

Hire a Zipcar
First things first, reserve your nearest Zipcar ahead of time to guarantee a stress-free move. We have a range of affordable options for you to choose from, including 5-doors, hatchbacks, mini vans and vans. Just locate your preferred vehicle on our website, click to reserve, and pay by the hour as you need it. Simple!

Budget
Moving house can be a costly business, even without the removal man and his van in the picture. Decide what you have to spend on boxes and bubble wrap beforehand, budget, and hopefully you won’t end up out of pocket.

Write a To-Do List
It may sound like a no-brainer, but organised lists are one of our top tips for moving house. They also give a great feeling of smug satisfaction when you’re able to tick off the items one-by-one.

Make a Timeline
Use your calendar to plan ahead, and create a timeline for cancelling bills and subscriptions to your current address. Start this process early to avoid any nasty charges that might otherwise be incurred.

Redirect Post
It’s easier that it sounds – we promise. Visit the Royal Mail website, let them know about your imminent change of address, and they’ll take it from there.

Car Boot Sales
Be realistic: do you really think you’ll be able to fit all your accumulated possessions into your new place? Why not consider selling off some of your less treasured items at a local car boot sale, and making a little extra cash while you’re at it. The Shepperton Car Boot Sale and the St. Augustine’s Car Boot Sale are among Zipcar’s favourites.

Label Boxes
Useful, imperative even, but correct and detailed labelling of boxes is critical to aid the unpacking process at the other end. List a few main items in each box, and mark the fragile boxes as fragile!

Pack Your Laptop Last

Lugging heavy boxes to and fro is never going to be anyone’s idea of a good time. To make the process better, we recommend crafting a custom playlist to listen to while packing up all your worldly possessions. Why not kick things off with Madness’s “Our House” – your stuff will, after all, be in the middle of the street.

Clean Up
Whether you’re moving out of a shared apartment or leaving your own house, don’t forget to clean up after yourself. Fingers crossed you’ll earn good karma, and find the next place sparkling upon arrival.

Invite Friends
Round up a handful of friends and get them involved on moving day, to make the entire process more efficient. You can spend the time you save down at the pub together afterwards, celebrating the big move. Drinks are on you, of course…
