At Zipcar, we’re all about saving our members money, and saving them the hassle of owning a car. And we are always on the lookout for new opportunities to spread the word. So today, we’re really pleased to announce that Zipcar has announced a partnership with Croydon Council, London’s largest borough, to provide a car club service to council employees.
Not only will Croydon Council staff benefit from having 23 Zipcar vehicles on site during the working week, the cars will also be available for hire to local Zipcar members during peak times, such as evenings and weekends. So it’s a win-win.
The Croydon partnership was due to the success of a pilot scheme Zipcar ran with the council, which resulted in:
- A cut in car travel costs by 42%, from £1.3m to £756,000
- A reduction in Croydon Council employee car users by more than half (52%), from 1,284 to 611
- A drop in employee business miles by 42%, from 1.1m miles to 642,000 miles per year
- A reduction in employee CO2 emissions by 36%, from 324 tonnes, to 207 tonnes annually
Being able to cut down on traditional employee car usage is a really big deal for Croydon, as it means cost savings and also a significant reduction in emissions (which helps with their Green agenda), while still offering flexibility and convenience to their employees in terms of transport.
This is a great example of how councils and the private sector can work really well together to provide innovative services that benefit both the council itself and local residents, all while saving taxpayers’ money. We hope other councils follow Croydon’s lead, so we can hear the Zip Zip of new vehicles all over London!
